Our Chinese Chestnut Trees are grown in the state of Pennsylvania and are used to the weather that Pennsylvania gives them. All dormant trees are alive and well going through the previous winters outside.
Each and every one of the trees on the store have been carefully cared for since placed in our hands as a chestnut. The chestnut is carefully rinsed of any dirt and dried before going into cold storage. This process is repeated over the next few weeks to make sure they will not grow any mold.
In cold storage the chestnuts are placed in gallon size Ziploc bags with most paper towels. I prefer to do it this way to keep a close eye on them for both mold, and to see when taproots are starting to make their way out.
Once the taproot is about an inch long, the seed is removed and placed in their own growing container with Miracle grow moisture controlled soil. The soil helps them from being over watered and also helps them from drying out. The trees during this time are in a controlled environment as most of the time, the trees are starting to form early March when the weather is not good for trees to start to grow. Most nights the temperature is below freezing.
Once the trees are about one foot tall and the weather is right, the trees will make their way outside to get the hardening started. Once the Chinese Chestnut trees start to harden, the chestnut tree will focus not so much to grow vertically but to build a strong and sturdy tree to withstand the wind and weather.
Once the Chestnut tree has hardened they are ready to go off to their forever planting area.
