This video explains the best time to plant chestnut trees. I myself have two separate times to plant chestnut trees. I prefer the early spring right after the first frost, and then again in the very late summer/early fall. This would be late August into September. This would all depend on how much time you can devote to monitoring your trees in the area you planted them.
Oak trees are a much more dominate species in my area since the chestnut tree is found in very few locations. The ratio is around 500:1 and could be a much different ratio where you are at. Check out this video that explains the big differences between the two.
Tree food plots could be a good thing if you have the time, money, and space for them. For most of the hunters, we may have one of those so a full food plot may not be the best, however adding a few trees to your existing food plot is very beneficial. Watch this video to see how the people of White Tail Properties do it.
